DISRUPTIONS AT THE UNIVERSITY
FALL 2015. PERFORMANCE HANDOUT. MANIPULATED AUDIO FROM "WHY A LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION MATTERS" BY WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT MICHAEL ROTH, EXCERPT FROM WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY STUDENT CODE OF CONDUCT 2015-2016.
Inspired by artist Ramón Miranda Beltrán's project U, which calls for practices of resistance at institutions of higher education, I excerpted Wesleyan University's official student handbook -- specifically its language around "disruption" -- as well as a speech in which University president Michael Roth wields language of resistance to further brand and sell the liberal arts enterprise. Can we listen together for the alternatives always already embedded in these regulatory texts, to move towards other forms of radical study?
